Seria a crise econônomica global originada pela arrogância e autoconfiança em demasia dos banqueiros e economistas? Em uma conferência em Nova York, o jornalista Malcolm Gladwell (foto), autor de "Blink" e "Tipping Point", defendeu que a falha dos mercados foi psicológica, e não uma falha de regulamentação ou incompetência. Banqueiros estavam confiantes demais e começaram a se achar maiores do que de fato eram. O excesso de confiança é uma estratégia evolutiva para se defender. Faz com que você pareça "maior" do que realmente é. Mas também pode levar a erros grosseiros. A seguir, alguns trechos:
Bankers were “miscalibrated,” Gladwell says, referring to an overestimation of their ability to make predictions and control the somewhat random environments surrounding them.
“Incompetence is certainty in the absence of expertise,” he said. “Overconfidence is certainty in the presence of expertise.” As an example, he cited doctors as “among the most spectacularly miscalibrated people on the face of the earth.”
Overconfidence, Mr. Gladwell says, is likely, and unfortunately, an evolutionarily adaptive trait, because appearing “bigger and stronger” than you really are keeps you from being attacked. And the people most likely to appear “bigger and stronger” than they really are tend to be the ones who have “miscalibrated” beliefs that they really are bigger and stronger than they really are.

Neste vídeo, Gladwell divulga seu livro "Fora de Série: Outliers", e explica como obter sucesso. Basicamente é uma questão de prática, oportunidade e sorte. O que me agrada muito, porque desmistifica o mito de que apenas com vontade as coisas acontecem.
